Being an IIRP trainer helping teachers and administrators to transform their schools is a phenomenal experience!
- Henry McClendon IIRP Trainer & Licensee, Detroit, Michigan, USA

After more than thirty years working in the helping professions in settings from alternative education to substance abuse treatment to running a small non-profit training and education organization, my most satisfying days are spent teaching and learning with others about the concept of restorative practices. Having gone through IIRP TOT program provides me with yet another opportunity to remind myself why I ever got into this business. At the end of the day what makes a difference in a kid's life is relationships. (Re)discovering this not so novel idea with educators — hearing how refreshing that concept is to them after knowing the toll that No Child Left Behind has taken on their souls, well, it gives me great hope that we are on our way to remembering what's important.
- Lee Rush, Executive Director, Just Community, Inc., Quakertown, Pennsylvania, USA

The IIRP conducts a three-day Training of Trainers (TOT) to teach experienced practitioners how to facilitate the "Introduction to Restorative Practices" and "Using Circles Effectively" trainings. Once trained, participants will be certified to provide these trainings for approved IIRP licensees. Trainers must be affiliated with a licensee to provide trainings in their district, organization or area.

(The IIRP also offers trainer certification and licensure for the "Facilitating Restorative Conferences" training. More information here.)

Steps to Becoming a Certified Trainer

  1. Attend both the "Introduction to Restorative Practices" and "Using Circles Effectively" trainings.
If you have yet to attend one or both of these trainings, view upcoming "Introduction to Restorative Practices" training dates here and "Using Circles Effectively" training dates here.

  2. Gain experience using these practices in your setting.

  3. Complete the information form here to begin the Training of Trainers process.
An IIRP representative will contact you.

  4. Attend the three-day Training of Trainers.
These are scheduled throughout the year at the IIRP's Bethlehem campus. (see "Currently Scheduled" area above). The training of trainers can also be held on-site at your organization with a minimum of four (4) participants.

  5. Receive expert feedback from an IIRP master trainer and be certified when you hold your first training
This is an opportunity to receive extra support for your first training and receive useful feedback on providing the best-quality training.

Licensure

The IIRP offers the opportunity for individuals and organizations to become licensed to provide two of its "core" trainings — "Introduction to Restorative Practices" and "Using Circles Effectively."

For organizations that have already held some amount of on-site training from the IIRP, this will provide a cost-effective way to continue to train new staff by becoming capable of providing this high-quality training "in-house." For others, it provides a way to initiate the implementation of restorative practices in your setting or conduct training in your locale.

Steps to Licensure

  1. Call the IIRP at 1-610-807-9221 or complete the form here to request licensing information.

  2. Submit a Licensing Agreement to the IIRP outlining the potential target audience—who and where you would like to train.
The IIRP will ask that this be narrowly defined, such as within a specific organization or limited geographical area.

  3. Agree to all terms of the Licensing Agreement.

  4. Submit the finalized Licensing Agreement to the IIRP and pay the $100 licensing fee.
All licenses are renewed annually at the same rate.

Also, licensees must submit to the IIRP a per-participant charge (currently $10) for each participant who attends either the "Introduction to Restorative Practices" or "Using Circles Effectively" trainings.
