Suspension rates for the first term of the 2009-2010 school year are lower in both secondary and elementary schools, as reported in the Durham News. This segment focused on an anti-bullying program at the Durham District School Board’s Sinclair High School, in Whitby, Ontario, which employs talking circles to impart empathy and respect. The program features an interview with Sinclair’s vice principal Susan Jones. IIRP Canada director Bruce Schenk is bringing restorative practices to the Durham District School Board. The focus of PASAP is "assisting youth who are at-risk to find the strength in overcoming the barriers to success." The conference is March 7, 8, and 9, 2010 at the Penn Stater Conference Center, in State College, PA. 2010 marks the 25th year of the PASAP and the 20th conference.

Two Philadelphia schoolteachers, members of the Teacher Action Group, wrote an op-ed piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer saying that they would like to see restorative practices employed to handle the recent violent conflict between Asian- and African-American students at South Philadelphia High School, as well as district wide “to make meaningful change and prevent violence in every school in the city.”

Hundreds attend 12th IIRP World Conference

On October 21-23, 2009, nearly three hundred educators, social service, criminal justice and other professionals from 15 countries and 18 U.S. states gathered in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA, for the 12th IIRP World Conference, "Restoring Community in a Disconnected World, Part 2." Like all IIRP conferences, the event was acclaimed by attendees as a wonderful opportunity to support each other’s efforts and share success stories and questions around restorative practices. An in-depth report on the conference will be published soon in the Restorative Practices eForum. We will also be posting breakout session papers, as presenters continue to send them in. (All breakout session papers are welcome.)
